Longer turnaround times for paper tax returns
As the deadline for self assessment paper tax returns approaches, some experts are warning that individuals could experience delays in their forms being processed.
According to recent press reports, HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) is redeploying its resources to ‘higher priority’ work, which could lead to longer turnaround times for paper forms handled by the Central Agent Authorisation Team.
Individuals wishing to file their paper tax return by the 31 October deadline could encounter delays of up to eight weeks.
‘We are determined to deliver efficiency savings and the best possible customer service,’ said HMRC. ‘In August we clearly set out changes to the turnaround time of some agents' forms.
‘The vast majority of agents use online forms and turnaround times for the online forms will not be affected.’
Taxpayers have until 31 January 2011 to submit their 2010 tax return online.
