Computer games and blu-ray discs enter the nation's 'shopping basket'
Computer games and accessories, and blu-ray disc players have replaced disposable cameras and squash court hire in the nation's 'shopping basket' of goods, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) has revealed.
The introduction of the new high technology goods represents evolving trends in the digital sector.
The list of 650 different goods and services is used by the ONS to calculate inflation, and has been in place for more than 50 years.
The shopping basket is updated annually, with items added and removed in order to reflect changes in consumer spending patterns.
Small bottles of mineral water and cereal bars have also made a new appearance, reflecting changing health trends.
Meanwhile, home services maintenance policies have been introduced to reflect the take-up of insurance policies to cover such services as central heating.
